“Distance” explores and stretches the Grigoryan brothers’ sheer joy of playing the guitar, their exquisite talents; capturing all the spontaneity of the live performance. Their duo CD is infused with energy showcasing a variety of genres, and as always, their technical prowess.
The title track “Distance”, proof of Leonard Grigoryan’s formidable composition skills, alludes to the theme of geographical separation. This concept is underscored by the global locations of its composers:
- From a Dream was written by good friend – US jazz legend Ralph Towner.
- William Lovelady who collaborated on Slava’s CD Another Night in London is based in Oxfordshire
- whilst composer/guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel hails from Austria.
Australian master composer Nigel Westlake evokes the majesty of Rajasthan in Shards of Jaisalmer. In contrast, emotional proximity also plays its role – with parents Edward and Irina Grigoryan performing on this recording. Edward, also composer of the evocative Tian Shan, was the brothers’ guitar teacher. Melbourne’s exceptional musical fraternity is represented with compo-sitions by Jeremy Alsop and Shaun Rigney.
Ranging from playful to pensive, “Distance” envelopes and beguiles the listener; evoking a response that is anything but distant.
“Distance” is dedicated to Eli Westlake.
